When it made its first ever appearance in North America in 1986, the Acura Integra was a runaway sensation by every metric. The powerful sedan became an icon of the ’90s car culture but then faded away in 2001, the year of its last sedan model year. Now, two decades later, the Japanese automaker has only to evoke its name, and already, the Acura Integra sedan is once again the talk of the town. As a matter of fact, it’s making its big comeback in 2022!

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Only very recently has the Japanese luxury brand unveiled the first images of the new Acura Integra 2022. The new model has resolutely modern features yet still includes a few echoes tipping its hat to the flagship models of the ’90s.

For one thing, like the first models, it’s a four-door sedan rather than a two-door coupe. Conversely, it has a roofline that harkens back to the coupe legacy, a feature from some of its earlier models. It has slender and dynamic contours that evoke the mythical sportiness of the car.

The pictures also unveil a distinctive colour, Indy Yellow, which is reminiscent of the latest Integra Type R and its Phoenix Yellow colour—yet another successful recall. This is complemented by a variety of black trims and undercut by contrasting and slick black wheels. If you look closely, you can also see the word “Integra” below the headlights, just like in the early days of this model!

Although the design does reference past trends, it still flies the flag of the contemporary Acura look, with the famous Jewel Eye LED headlights lending that bright, beautiful look that is synonymous with today’s Acura vehicles. There is also the now classic pentagonal grille with the logo in the centre.

The Acura has always been a driver-centric machine, and that remains the case today. Underneath the hood, we get the first turbocharged engine for this model, a 1.5 L 4-cylinder engine. Predictably, this is the popular engine from the sporty Civic Si.

We’ll have to wait and see how much power this engine packs, but it’s expected to be over 200 horsepower, a little more than the Civic.

The other interesting feature is that there will be a 6-speed manual transmission which car enthusiasts can select. The other transmission should be an automatic, but details have yet to be disclosed.

There will also be a limited-slip differential to ensure the best possible ride. Other versions of the car will probably be added, including a Type S version, that should be even more performance-oriented for fans of this car and car lovers in general.

Will we get an all-wheel-drive version? Or a more affordable version? What will the interior look like? For the moment, the Japanese automaker is keeping us in suspense and hinting at a few more juicy details to come.

Here’s what we do know: the 2022 Acura Integra will be a sporty sedan with coupe-like features that pay homage to the classic model of the past. Naturally, we can expect a luxurious interior and advanced technologies, much like all modern Acura vehicles.

Be on the lookout for the next update from your Acura Montreal Centre dealer. This iconic model car should be with us as early as next year!
